About hematite: This is a mineral that is mined from iron mines in various parts of the world. The name "hematite" in Greek means blood, as the powdered form of it (as well as when it is deliberately scratched, scraped or polished) appear like blood. Hematite was first used thousands of years ago. In fact, one of its key historical uses was as a pigment in ancient Egypt. Egyptians used this mineral as a coloring agent in pottery to give them shades of brown or red, and then later, used in varied paints. Due to its high iron content, it has excellent magnetic properties as well.
